Who Are We

Chef Diana Widjojo is a New York City born and raised chef whose culinary journey is deeply rooted in both family and the desire to elevate Indonesian cuisine on the global stage. Growing up in a family where food was at the heart of daily life and means of survival, Diana developed a deep love for the bold flavors and time-honored traditions of Indonesian cuisine. Diana's culinary journey began at home and was deeply influenced by her mother, who is also a talented chef in her own right.

Being raised in a multicultural neighborhood, Diana was exposed to a wide range of culinary traditions, but she noticed a distinct absence of Indonesian representation in the broader culinary scene. This gap became a driving force in her career, motivating her to share the rich, diverse flavors of her homeland with the world. Determined to change the lack of Indonesian representation in the culinary world, Diana honed her skills in different kitchens in New York and Philadelphia but first in her family's restaurant where she laid the foundation of her craft. Working under her mother’s guidance, she learned the importance of balance, flavor, and using fresh culturally appropriate ingredients.

Now, at Rice & Sambal, with the help of her parter, Jennnifer Cowden, she reimagines classic Indonesian dishes with modern techniques, using locally sourced ingredients and importing rare ingredients from Indonesia.

Beyond the kitchen, Chef Diana is passionate about sharing the flavors of Indonesia with the world, mentoring aspiring chefs, advancing the visibility of Indonesian cuisine and also community work to promote Indonesian culture. She holds yearly festivals promoting Indonesia as a way to give back to her community.  When she's not in the kitchen, Diana enjoys traveling, discovering new food, and spending time with her family.
